We were able to again make our post-Thanksgiving journey to Sanibel Island. The weather was perfect for the most part with sunsets like this one most nights. The temperatures, at their best, were considerably warmer than last year.
However, the weather was not always at its best. We also got our share of rain and cool weather. This storm blowing in off the Gulf was pretty impressive when seen from our poolside porch.
One day we noticed what we thought was a stick floating in the water on the other side of the lagoon. However, as it approached we discovered this fellow! He was not very long, but I'd imagine the ladies around the pool were glad he chose to stay in the un-chlorinated water!
One of the strangest things that happened on this trip involved this guy.
We noticed him up the beach a way standing up on a piece of driftwood. We'd not nocied the egrets perching like this before, but didn't pay it much mind until he began to slowly approach us. He came closer and closer, amazing us with his bravado, until he found this little piece of shell and camped out on it. What this picture doesn't show very well is how close he was to us - only a bit beyond my feet! He stayed there long enough for me to take quite a few pictures and even stuck around while we made a trip into the condo and came back.
We love Sanibel. The people are great, there are lots of great restaurants, tons of opportunities to explore the natural beauty of the island, and even if you don't want to do all that stuff, it's just a great place to decompress! This was our third year in a row, and I think we're hooked!
